We’ve all been there.

Questioning that thing we said to a friend that we wish we didn’t.

Questioning why that person hurt us, and wondering what we could’ve done differently, or ruminating on what we wish that person would’ve done for us instead.

What if I told you that those thoughts were actually causing you more pain than the actual painful experience that occurred in your reality?

The other day I was talking to my therapist openly about my struggles with overthinking. Whenever something off happens, I find myself constantly going back over it, replaying it in my head with different scenarios, trying to find justification or an understanding of what occurred.

I thought that by doing that, I was taking accountability by finding any loopholes in the plot that I didn’t see before and making true sense of things.

But really, what she explained, was that by overthinking it I was actually just causing myself to suffer from an event that only happened once, over and over again.

“You can overthink if it’s productive, like thinking over the new color you want to paint your kitchen until you find the right one, but if it’s negative, then you are just making your body re-live a traumatic event over and over. And for what purpose? Rehearsal’s sake?”
